XM is the abbreviation for xióng māo (熊猫) in Chinese, which means 'panda'.  The Chinese word is actually composed of two characters, the first one meaning 'bear', and the second one 'cat'. But when they are combined together, they mean 'panda'. How interesting!

 

As in English, the Chinese word for 'panda' usually refers to the giant panda (大熊猫). For the red panda, the Chinese call it 'small panda' (小熊猫).

 

Sometimes you may see a Chinese person named 'Pan Da'. But he/she is not referring to himself/herself as the cute animal. In fact, 'Pan' (潘) is a common family name in Chinese, and 'Da' a common given name (most likely '达', meaning 'reach' or 'intelligent', but it can be other less common characters).
